Polyphonic Mysteries Revealed – Svetla Stanilova teaches Ivan Spassov with singing demonstration by Elizabeth Ann Setzer
One of Bulgaria’s most highly revered folk singing teachers and choir conductors, Svetla Stanilova, will teach a rare open rehearsal class focusing on the work of the late Ivan Spassov, one of Bulgaria’s extraordinary and most unusual composers. The poignant ballad Balno Li Ti E Sino Ljo will be the focal point of work during the class. Spearheaded by Elizabeth Ann Setzer, former music director of Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble and a Fulbright Fellow with Svetla Stanilova herself, a vocal quartet was assembled specially for the class. Featuring some of USA’s finest singers of Bulgarian folk music – Eve Elliot, Jessica Ng, Jane Parkes, and Elizabeth Ann Setzer – the quartet will showcase the song’s arrangement during the Sofia – Los Angeles live Zoom bridge of the master class. Updated Sibelius score and lyric sheet will be provided to all participants and listeners, with abundant opportunities for Q&A throughout the class.
In addition to Balno Li Ti E Sino Ljo, Stanilova will discuss Ivan Spassov’s overall compositional style and techniques as seen in the examples of songs like Mehmetyo, Ayshinko and Begala Rada. As someone who worked closely with Ivan Spassov during the time period the compositions were written, and being one of the first conductors to realize and record these compositions, Svetla Stanilova is uniquely skilled to showcase, teach and discuss the pieces. Score excerpts for the above songs will be shared during the class.
Special guests are expected to join for this momentous reunion!
